Dance Movement Therapy Journey
My interest and passion for learning more about Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) began in an Improvisational Dance course I had at NMU in 2021 and was introduced to the Gaga Movement Language from Ohad Naharin and how it was used as a therapeutic tool for dancers as well as non-dancers.
While at NMU in Summer semester 2022 I created a presentation for my final exam for "Art Meets Science" course. We had to develop a presentation about a question that can be solved by using both art and science.
Then in winter semester I completed my Psychology Capstone along with my Dance Capstone all in one research proposal about why DMT is a viable option for children with mental disorders.
In 2025 I spent three semesters with Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in the Low Residency Graduate Creative Arts Therapy Program for Dance Movement Therapy. In those three semesters I gained more knowledge and experience in DMT techniques and concepts, as well as some Art Therapy techniques and concepts. I was also introduced to Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), Bartenieff Fundamentals (BF), and Kestenberg Movement Profile (KMP) languages and concepts of movement behavior from Cheryl Clark. I also had the opportunity to learn DMT Theory and Practice, from Elissa White who studied DMT under Marian Chace and established the American Dance Therapy Association with the help of a few other notable practitioners.
